The central theme of this three-volume work is the transformation of a “mental” Ukraine into a real one — of a people into a nation, and of a territory into a state. The second volume focuses on Ukrainians in the flames of World War II and in the era of the Cold War. After the end of World War II, Ukraine became territorially united, while the global confrontation of world systems created the conditions for its gradual move toward sovereignty. The main analytical focus is war as a geopolitical, social, and cultural phenomenon — a formative force that played a system-building role in shaping modern Ukrainian national consciousness.
