Daniel Bovua

Daniel Beauvois was born in 1938 in northern France. Having mastered Russian and Polish, he chose history as the subject of his doctoral dissertation and developed an early interest in Ukraine. After serving as Director of the Center for French Civilization at the University of Warsaw (1969–1972) and working at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris (1972–1977), he defended his dissertation Lumières et Société en Europe de l’Est. 1803–1832 (Enlightenment and Society in Eastern Europe, 1803–1832, 1977), which was later published in Polish three times: Szkolnictwo polskie na ziemiach litewsko-ruskich (Polish Education in the Lithuanian-Ruthenian Lands, 1991) and Wilno, polska stolica kulturalna zaboru rosyjskiego (Vilnius — the Polish Cultural Capital of the Russian-Annexed Lands, 2010, 2012). Beauvois founded and led the Center for Polish Culture at the University of Lille (1978–1992) and served as Director of the Center for Slavic History at the University Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne, the only institution of its kind in France (1994–1998). From 1980 onwards, his research focused on the history of Right-Bank Ukraine, culminating in the publication of three books translated into Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian, which form the basis of this volume. Daniel Beauvois is a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as well as Doctor honoris causa of the Universities of Wrocław, Warsaw, and Kraków. From 1992 to 2000, he served as President of the French Association for Ukrainian Studies (AFEU). In Ukraine, he has published numerous articles, including studies on Pylyp Orlyk, Kostomarov as an inspiration for Prosper Mérimée, and various analyses of Russian-Polish-Ukrainian interactions.
