The book offers a detailed account of the history of Keleberda — a unique settlement in the lower reaches of the Dnipro, which, thanks to its location at a river crossing and its proximity to the Wild Field, served as a “gateway” to Rus’, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Hetmanate. Situated on the frontier between the Hetmanate, with its administrative system and regimental governance, and the free lands of Zaporizhzhia, the town absorbed their spirit and traditions.
The publication traces Keleberda’s path from a company town (center of a Cossack sotnia) of the Poltava Regiment, associated with figures such as Dmytro Vyshnevetsky, Ivan Sirko, and Ivan Mazepa, to its mention in the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk. Special attention is given to the 18th–19th centuries, when Keleberda flourished as a center of crafts, trade, and spiritual life, with six churches in operation. The book also provides a detailed account of the town’s transformation after the abolition of the Hetmanate’s autonomy, including the emergence of hamlets and the development of fishing, navigation, and milling. In addition, separate sections are devoted to the dramatic events of the 20th century and the revival of Keleberda following Ukraine’s independence, offering a comprehensive view of the community’s life across different eras.
