In this book, the author draws on extensive bibliography and a wide range of rarely used archival sources from Poland, Ukraine, and Western archives to examine four major episodes in Ukrainian–Polish history. The study focuses on the Union of Lublin — its nature and consequences; the relations and conflicts between Polish landowners and Ruthenian (Ukrainian) peasants in Right-Bank Ukraine in the 19th and early 20th centuries; the circumstances surrounding the 1920 agreement between Józef Piłsudski and Symon Petliura and its historical outcomes; and the causes and nature of the Volhynian massacres during World War II.

In many respects, the author’s interpretation goes beyond the conventional paradigms dominant in both Ukrainian and Polish historiography, encouraging readers to reflect critically and draw their own conclusions about these complex and often controversial historical events.
