During the first revolution in the Russian Empire, monarchist segregation named Black Hundreds began to realize the possibility of Ukrainians establishing an independent state — and decided to commit a crime. Their target was the informal leader of Ukrainians under Russian rule, Borys Hrinchenko. To avoid public outcry, the conspirators carried out a series of insidious intrigues and took from him what he valued most.
