In this work by the distinguished Polish historian Aleksander Gieysztor (1916–1999), a comprehensive and highly integrated picture of the belief systems of Slavic tribes in the pre-Christian period is presented. The publication is based on a popular science text that the author continuously revised and expanded until the last years of his life. First published in the early 1980s, it was subsequently reissued several times and gained wide recognition.

The book also includes Aleksander Gieysztor’s radio and television talks addressed to a general audience, which complement the scholarly content by presenting complex issues of Slavic mythology in an accessible form.
