This book is devoted to the figure of the legendary Koshovyi Otaman of the Zaporizhian Sich, Ivan Sirko (1605(?)–1680) — an outstanding military leader and fighter against foreign invaders whose fame extended far beyond Ukraine. For a long time, his name was suppressed, distorted, and even banned both in the imperial era and during Soviet rule.

Drawing on a wide range of sources discovered over more than thirty years of archival research in Ukraine, Russia, Poland, and Germany, as well as on scholarly works by other historians, the author seeks to fill a significant gap in Ukrainian historiography by reconstructing Sirko’s life and activities as fully as possible. The publication offers a comprehensive portrait of one of the most remarkable figures of the Cossack era.
