This book is dedicated to a brief yet extraordinarily eventful period in Ukrainian history—from November 20, 1917, to April 29, 1918—when the first Ukrainian state of the 20th century, the Ukrainian People’s Republic, existed.

Drawing on a wide range of historical sources, the author offers an interpretation of events that differs in part from the traditional textbook account of the history of the UPR. The focus is not only on political processes and the formation of statehood, but also on aspects of everyday and symbolic life: the transition to the Gregorian calendar and Central European Time, the funerals of the Kruty defenders and victims of the civil conflict, political arrests and murders, as well as other events that may seem secondary at first glance but are substantively important.

This publication offers a deeper understanding of the complexity and multidimensionality of the first experience of Ukrainian statehood in the 20th century.
