In this book, Professor Dmytro Stepovyk explores the defining features of Baroque — one of the major artistic styles of the Enlightenment era — through the works of four outstanding masters of Ukrainian Baroque graphic art of the 17th and early 18th centuries: Oleksandr Tarasevych, Master Illia, Leontii Tarasevych, and Ivan Shchyrskyi. The author demonstrates that in the 17th–18th centuries Ukraine gained a unique artistic experience among the countries of Central and Eastern Europe by organically combining Western European Baroque forms with native Ukrainian artistic traditions.

Special attention is given to the convergence of Orthodox and Catholic aesthetics in works on both religious and secular themes. Analyzing the phenomenon of Ukrainian Baroque, the author defines its essential and formal characteristics and compares them with the indigenous Baroque traditions of Western European art.

The volume includes more than 200 illustrations representing various types and genres of engraving, offering a comprehensive view of Ukrainian Baroque printmaking and the broader circle of artists who contributed to its development.
