Due to historical circumstances, the overwhelming majority of documents relating to the history of Ukraine from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries are now preserved in Russian archives, to which Ukrainian researchers have limited or no access. This makes it especially important to bring these documentary treasures into scholarly and public circulation, allowing for a deeper understanding of the dramatic history of the Ukrainian state and the lessons it offers.

This volume contains documents related to the history of the Ukrainian Hetmanate between 1690 and 1709, including materials from the so-called Baturyn Archive, removed by Aleksandr Menshikov from the hetman’s residence during the destruction of Baturyn in 1708. These records constitute the incoming chancery of Hetman Ivan Mazepa — the only surviving hetman archival collection from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The book also includes original documents and copies of Mazepa’s universals that have remained largely unknown to the wider public.

This edition will be valuable to historians, students, educators, and all readers interested in the history of Ukraine.
