In the second volume of this edition, the author focuses on the dramatic attempts to preserve Ukrainian statehood during a period of political turmoil and the decline of the Cossack State. Particular attention is devoted to the political orientations of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, as well as to the efforts of Pylyp Orlyk, Ivan Skoropadsky, and Pavlo Polubotok to defend the autonomy and institutions of the Hetmanate despite the growing inevitability of its destruction.

The author builds his interpretation on a thorough analysis of legal and state documents, treaties concluded by the hetmans with foreign powers, and a wide range of literary sources, including outstanding examples of Ukrainian poetic art. Special attention is given to the History of the Rus’ as one of the most significant monuments of Ukrainian historical thought and national self-defense.
