Based on numerous sources and written in an engaging and accessible style, this book explores the everyday life of the Cossack elite of the Hetmanate in the 17th and early 18th centuries. It offers a detailed portrayal of domestic life, personal appearance, clothing, and material culture of the Cossack senior officers.

Special attention is given to the role of women of the period, who were often unafraid to intervene in serious political matters, influence their husbands and sons, and demonstrate strong and independent characters. Separate chapters focus on culture, education, leisure, social norms, and concepts of virtue within the Ukrainian elite. The book shows how this social stratum, while adopting many elements from Eastern traditions and even more from Western influences, did not merely imitate them but preserved and enriched its own customs and traditions, creating a unique and vivid society.
