World War I (1914–1918), a global-scale phenomenon, became a turning point in world history and a true boundary between eras. It led to the collapse of the fundamental values of the nineteenth century, a radical redistribution of spheres of influence, the fall of empires, and the emergence of new states on their ruins. The postwar order left deep wounds and fueled revanchist sentiments, while humanitarian challenges intensified. The war’s vast social impact was reflected in the destruction of everyday life, economic disruption, the worsening material conditions of the population, famine, and the suffering of millions. At the same time, profound changes occurred in human psychology and national consciousness, contributing to the growth of charitable initiatives and national movements.

This volume is a documentary collection presenting the Ukrainian context of the Great War through international diplomatic correspondence, strategic and operational military documents, reports of special agencies, administrative records of various institutions and organizations, statistical data, memoirs, and private letters of officers, rank-and-file soldiers, and civilians from both the frontline zone and the rear. The publication is supplemented with a selection of original photographs and maps of military operations.
