The book offers a comprehensive overview of the development of Ukrainian literary creativity both within Ukraine’s ethnic lands and in areas of settlement and diaspora communities. Despite centuries of political and ideological divisions, Ukrainian cultural tradition preserved its inner continuity and vitality, sustaining the nation’s enduring aspiration for unity and self-awareness.

The author traces the key stages of the search for cultural common ground in the nineteenth century and examines the complex processes of the twentieth century, when two major waves of political emigration carried a significant part of Ukrainian literary life to the West. As a result, the creative work of many writers and intellectuals unfolded across three continents, shaping a distinctive phenomenon of literature created under conditions of forced separation.

Special attention is given to the spiritual and cultural connections maintained by intellectuals on both sides of the “Iron Curtain,” as well as to the trends that deserve comparison and deeper reflection.
